What are Essential Oils

Essential oils are organic compounds derived from plant sources such as root, bark, flowers and seeds. They are produced using a variety of techniques to capture odors, particles and many other chemical constituents from behind.

Aromatherapy is a holistic complementary therapy based on the principles of using essential oils to improve the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Oil can be used for many purposes.

The essential oil is concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils or simply as oil from which they are extracted from oil of clove.

Using essential oils in the bath is a very effective way to affect mood, though, but can be wasteful as many essential oils stick to the sides of the bath. Add the essential oils to a spoonful or two of the oil or SOAP solution and add it to the bathwater before you – otherwise the oil will evaporate before you have a chance to enjoy it or take advantage of the absorption through the lungs and nose. Oil is an "essential" element in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent or essence of the plant. Other processes include expression or solvent extraction. They are used in cosmetics, soaps, perfumes and other products the taste of food and drinks and the smells of incense and household cleaning products.

Kewda Oil is obtained from Pandanus Odoratissimus by hydrodistillation. Pandanus Odoratissimus belongs to the family of Pandanaceae. It is a densely branched shrub, rarely erect. It is commonly found along the seashore of India. It contains about 74% Phenylethylmethyl ether, phenylyehtyl alchohol 16% and phenyl ethyl acetate 2.75% and traces of nerol, neryl acetate, citronellyl acetate, farnesol and nerolidol.

The almond (Prunus amygdalus, syn. Prunus dulcis, Amygdalus communis, Amygdalus dulcis) is a species of tree native to the Middle East and South Asia. "Almond" is also the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of this tree. The fruit of the almond is a drupe, consisting of an outer hull and a hard shell with the seed (which is not a true nut) inside. Shelling almonds refers to removing the shell to reveal the seed. Citronella Oil


Citronella oil is a volatile oil which is distilled using steam from the greenish blue, lemon-scented leaves and stem of the plant Cymbopogon nardus (Ceylon citronella) orCymbopogon winteratus (Java type citronella) and the main constituents being citronellal and geraniol. In trade, citronella oil is categorised into two types:
1) Ceylon citronella oil - obtained from Cymbopogon nardus Rendle, (inferior type)
2) Java citronella oil - obtained from Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt, (superior type)

The Ceylon citronella oil was the more widely produced citronella oil, until the beginning of this century. However, the Java citronella oil slowly began to show dominance in the market because of its higher yield of oil.

Guaiac Wood Oil


Oil of guaiac is a fragrance used in soap. It comes from the palo santo tree (Bulnesia sarmientoi).

Oil of guaiac is produced through steam distillation of a mixture of wood and sawdust from palo santo. It is sometimes incorrectly called guaiac wood concrete. It is a yellow to greenish yellow semi-solid mass which melts around 40-50 ºC. Once melted, it can be cooled back to room temperature yet remain liquid for a long time. Oil of guaiac has a soft roselike odour, similar to the odour of Hybrid Tea roses or violets. Because of this similarity, it has sometimes been used as an adulterant for rose oil.

Oil of guaiac is primarily composed of 42-72% guaiol, bulnesol, δ-bulnesene, β-bulnesene, α-guaiene, guaioxide and β-patchoulene. It is considered non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and non phototoxic to human skin.

Oil of guaiac was also a pre-Renaissance remedy to syphilis.

Mentha (also known as Mint, from Greek míntha,[1] Linear B mi-ta)[2] is a genus of plants in the family Lamiaceae (mint family).[3] Thespecies are not clearly distinct and estimates of the number of species varies from 13 to 18.[4] Hybridization between some of the species occurs naturally. Many other hybrids as well as numerous cultivars are known in cultivation.
The genus has a subcosmopolitan distribution across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and North America.
Mints are aromatic, almost exclusively perennial, rarely annual, herbs. They have wide-spreading underground and overground stolons[6]and erect, square,branched stems. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs, from oblong to lanceolate, often downy, and with aserrate margin. Leaf colors range from dark green and gray-green to purple, blue, and sometimes pale yellow.[5] The flowers are white to purple and produced in false whorls called verticillasters. The corolla is two-lipped with four subequal lobes, the upper lobe usually the largest. The fruit is a nutlet, containing one to four seeds.

Neem Oil


Neem oil is made from the seeds of neem trees. It is most commonly used as an organic pesticide. Neem oil can help control pests by deterring them with its strong odor. The oil also kills some insects by poisoning them when they ingest it, or by suffocating them when they are coated with it. Neem works on a variety of bugs, including Japanese beetles, aphids and whitefly.

Rose Otto Essential Oil


Rose Otto Essential Oil (rose oil or attar of rose) is steam distilled from the flower of the plant.
Rose Absolute is extracted through a solvent methodand can contain chemical constituents, therefore it is notconsidered therapeutic grade. It is of lesser quality and therefore used primarily by the perfume industry.
The process in which rose otto essential oil is obtained is a two part process, and is very costly compared to obtaining the absolute.

Also known by common names of Rose Otto Essential Oil, it blends well with geranium, chamomile Roman, bergamot, clary sage, jasmine, patchouli, lemon, lavender, mandarin, sandalwood, vetiver, it also has in it properties like antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, bactericidal and laxative.
